Cherie Carter-Scott (Life Coach): ‘People focus too much on what they don't have’
She was a guest in over 400 television shows, including Oprah. Cherie Carter-Scott is known as the ‘mother of coaching’, author of books on life and a pioneer in the field of human development and motivation.
“I am a curious person”, she says about her profession. “I want to know what makes people happy”, says Carter-Scott. And yes, there are probably too many life coaches in the world, but “it’s just very nice to have someone that believes in you and motivates you.”
Carter-Scott, who lost her mom at a young age and saw her dad take off when she was only 20, is the author of several books about life and love. Her company MMS Worldwide trains people to be a life coach, using special, self-designed methods.
Skype
Carter-Scott still coaches many people herself, from entrepreneurs to board members. Most of them via Skype. “People come to improve their relations with others, family, friends or patients”, she says.
Her clients seek guidance as to which direction they should take in life. “I am not a shrink, I focus on the here and now and the ambitions that people have in life”, says Carter-Scott. “Together we look at what makes you happy.”
Forgetting yourself
Because lots of people who come to talk to Carter-Scott say: I am very good at my job, but I am forgetting myself. “Then I say: let’s talk about this. Which strategy do we chose to change?”
The life coach sees many ‘negaholics’. “People who focus on what they can’t do, instead of having a vision about the possibilities.”
Her most recent book: If Life is a game, These are the Rules became very popular in a short amount of time. “It contains basic rules such as there are no mistakes, only lessons”, says Carter-Scott.
“And these lessons are repeated until learned, they are part of our dna.”
